Backend Engineer III

We are a well-funded Series A fintech startup building core infrastructure for cross-border payments, FX orchestration, and global money movement.

Role Overview

As a Backend Engineer III, you will take ownership of critical backend systems and play a key role in shaping architecture, scalability, and reliability. This is a hands-on senior IC role for engineers who can design systems, make sound trade-offs, and independently drive complex projects to completion.

You’ll work closely with product, platform, and infrastructure teams to build systems that handle real money, real scale, and real complexity.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, design, and build high-scale backend services using Node.js (TypeScript) and Python
• Own complex backend components and drive them from design to production
• Build and optimize APIs, async workflows, and background processing systems
• Design systems with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and fault tolerance
• Review code and provide technical guidance to mid-level engineers
• Work closely with product and business teams to translate requirements into robust technical solutions
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in a high-availability environment
• Continuously improve engineering standards, tooling, and best practices

Required Skills & Experience

• 4–6 years of backend engineering experience in production systems
• Strong expertise in Node.js and TypeScript
• Solid experience working with Python in backend services
• Deep understanding of system design, data modeling, and API design
• Hands-on experience with SQL/NoSQL databases
• Experience building and operating services on cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure)
• Familiarity with microservices, message queues, and async/event-driven systems
• Ability to independently handle ambiguous problems and make architecture decisions

Good to Have

• Prior experience in fintech, payments, FX, or financial systems
• Exposure to distributed systems and high-throughput architectures
• Understanding of security, compliance, and data integrity
• Experience mentoring junior or mid-level engineers
